Last Appearance: Episode 532
Key Storylines:

in Vietnam, and Mitch tracks Barney down after he's released

Barney is delighted to see Mitch again as well, but he
quickly realises that Mitch has become very unstable,
and he has to warn him repeatedly about his behaviour.
He eventually washes his hands of Mitch after Mitch effectively
kidnaps Amanda and holds her at Barney's shack in the
middle of nowhere for several days.
Meanwhile, Barney meets Fiona Thompson, and there's an
immediate connection. After they've known each other for
only a few weeks, Barney proposes to her, and he's ecstatic
when she accepts. However, the happiness is short-lived:
firstly, there's tension after Fiona discovers that Barney
was part of a gang of army men who killed a group of peasants
in Vietnam without any real provocation; and then, while
Barney and Fiona are at David Palmer's country house at
a party for Patricia, a bomb goes off, and Barney is seriously
injured. He's rushed to hospital, where surgeons start
operating, but he dies when his heart gives out.

Last Appearance: Episode 639
Key Storylines:
Roland Armstrong was married to Barbara Morrell for over
twenty years until, in 1982, she learnt that he'd died
of a heart attack while on business in America. In reality,
Roland had witnessed a crime syndicate execution and had
to be put into a witness protection programme for his
own safety; he couldn't even say goodbye to the wife and
family he loved. He spent his time travelling around America
and Europe under a new identity until, in 1985, he bumps
into Samantha Morrell in Venice. At the same time, he
develops pneumonia, and the next thing he knows, Barbara
has turned up and is taking him back to Australia.
He moves into a bedsit at Irene and Fiona's boarding
house, where he has to start trying to come to terms with
the fact that he woman he still loves is now married to
Gordon Hamilton. However, he vows to win her back. He
also has to come to terms with the fact that he has a
son - Andy Green - that he knew nothing about. After he
receives a telephone call claiming to be from the crime
syndicate that he testified against, Irene arranges for
Roland to move to David Palmer's country house in Sunbury,
Melbourne, where he'll be safer, but they then find out
that the call was a hoax arranged by Wayne and Andy in
order to keep Roland away from Barbara. Roland returns
to Sydney, hopeful that he and Barbara still have a chance.
He and Gordon end up forcing her to choose, and to Roland's
disappointment, she realises that she has to stay with
Gordon.
Roland accepts this and decides to start getting on with
his life. Because Barbara used the money she thought she'd
inherited on his death to invest in Gordon's company,
Roland finds himself on the company's Board. He also manages
to make things up with Andy - who had turned against him
for running out on him and his mother, Helen - and he
starts to develop feelings for his landlady, Irene Fisher.
A relationship develops between them quickly and Roland
proposes marriage - a proposal Irene accepts. However,
everything changes after Roland and Barbara's son, Simon,
returns to Australia after some time overseas: Roland
learns to his horror that Simon had been working in London
as a gigolo - and had picked up Irene while she had been
studying in the city. Unable to cope with his son and
his fiancée having slept together, and Simon's
refusal to give up this line of work, Roland decides he
can't marry Irene and he heads off to Hong Kong to see
his daughter, Wendy. After a few months, he bumps into
Barbara, who has left Gordon following the car accident
with Alison and Caroline in which he lost his memory and
thought he was still married to Patricia. Now that neither
of them has any ties, he and Barbara decide to try again.
