Chris Bainbridge
|
|
First Appearance: Episode 551
Last Appearance: Episode 688
Key Storylines:
After Fiona arranges for Barney Adams' Vietnam diaries
to be published, Chris turns up in Sydney and starts tormenting
her - firstly in secret, by sending her a dead spider
and by arranging for manure to be dumped outside the boarding
house - but he then reveals to her that he's after her
because the publication of the diaries has led to his
father having a breakdown; his father - Colonel Bainbridge
- was Barney's commanding officer in Vietnam, and what
was revealed in Barney's diaries about that time had been
too much for him. Chris ends up stalking Fiona through
the woods at Woombai, threatening to kill her, and is
only halted when Stephen Morrell runs him down with his
jeep.
Chris undergoes psychiatric care and, upon his release,
starts working at a hostel called Crossley House. Several
months later, he goes to see Fiona to apologise to her
for trying to kill her. She agrees to give him a second
chance. Chris then begins seeing Samantha Morrell, but
things sour between them - and with Fiona as well - after
Fiona takes in an illegal Vietnamese immigrant, Nguyen
Hung: Chris can't bring himself to like the boy. Everything
changes, though, after Chris ends up saving Hung's life
after he's bitten by a funnelweb spider, and he agrees
to try to be more tolerant of the boy.
Colonel Bainbridge is given day release from the psychiatric
home where he's being treated for his reaction to the
publication of Barney's diaries, and he turns up at Fiona's:
he blames her for his condition. Chris spends time with
his father to try and get him to calm down, but it's no
good: the Colonel's feelings about the way his life has
changed are too strong. He eventually ends up pulling
a gun on Fiona, threatening to kill her. However, at the
last minute, he turns the gun on himself and commits suicide.
After the funeral, Chris moves away to take care of his
mother.

Alan Brandon
|
|
First Appearance: Episode 506
Last Appearance: Episode 556
Key Storylines:
Alan is Karen Fox's son, born after she had an affair
with his father, George, when she was only 17. As far
as Alan is concerned, Karen tried to pressure George into
marrying her, but as he wouldn't leave his wife, she was
stuck with a kid she didn't want, she had no partner and
so she would have adopted him out, only George wouldn't
let her and took him away from her. Alan grew up with
his father and with his father's wife, Fay, who hated
him. When his father died, he left both of them a lot
of money. Fay's attitude towards him unfortunately became
even worse.
In late-1984, when Karen calls and asks to see him, Alan
is intrigued - and when he discovers that it's his money
that she's after, he makes her jump through hoops to get
it. A real ladies' man, Alan is attracted to Jill O'Donnel
- until he discovers that she has a kid - and Amanda Morrell
- although he really only goes after her to annoy Bob
'Mitch' Mitchell, after the two men have a run-in after
Mitch warns Alan off her. He then turns his attentions
to Katie O'Brien, but is annoyed when she keeps pushing
him away every time he wants to take things further.
Everything changes for Alan when he's seriously injured
in the bomb explosion at David Palmer's country house,
after a wheelchair being used by Patricia Palmer is boobytrapped.
Alan is left paralysed from the waist down and is told
he'll never walk again. To his surprise, as he lies in
his hospital bed, feeling bitter towards the whole world,
Jill proposes to him. Alan, however, turns her down and
instead asks Karen to arrange for him to be transferred
to a private hospital where Jill won't find him. Over
the next three months, he gradually begins to learn to
walk again, returning to mainstream life when he makes
an entrance at his mother's wedding to Wayne Hamilton.
His time in rehabilitation gives him a new, more-positive
and less-cynical outlook on life, and he displays signs
of affection towards Jill when he sees her - although
he's also very intrigued when he meets Leigh Palmer.
Determined to make a normal life for himself again, and
egged-on by Leigh, Alan tries his hardest to learn to
walk once more. However, after an argument with Leigh,
he topples over and does even more damage to his back
as a result. This further trauma leaves him confined to
bed permanently. Unable to cope with the thought of having
to spend his whole life in that condition, he pleads with
his nurse, Cheri Nolan, to help him die, after he learns
that she's performed acts of euthanasia on other sufferers.
Cheri refuses, pointing out that he still has a lot to
live for - Jill still loves him, for example. Alan is
determined to end his pain, however, and when he spots
some needles and some vials of morphine lying around in
Cheri's medical bag, he uses them to commit suicide.

to stand up for herself; she's similar in that respect
to his mother. He finds himself falling for her, and he
invites her to a ball that his mother is holding at the
Brooke residence. Janice accepts. Shortly before the event,
Owen asks Janice to marry him, and he's delighted when
she agrees. Unfortunately, events at the ball go horribly
wrong when May - for whom Owen managed to swing an invitation
- recognises his mother as Connie Hogg, a former prostitute.
Devastated by this revelation, Owen moves out of the
Brooke house and into a room at the mansion. He and Janice
start spending more time together, but they gradually
begin to argue. Owen is delighted when Gordon offers him
a job as curator at a nature reserve being opened at Woombai
- but after he and Janice go on a walk in the surrounding
bush, in which the two of them fight almost constantly,
Owen realises reluctantly that they're not suited, and
he calls the wedding off - at exactly the same time as
Janice also decides their relationship is doomed.
Owen moves into a small dwelling in the grounds at Woombai
to focus on his new position.
Owen throws himself into developing the reserve and is
devastated when Wayne pulls the plug on the idea. He heads
to Dural to protest to Gordon, but bumps into Wayne in
the driveway; Wayne orders Owen to pack his bags and leave
and to steer clear of mentioning the reserve to anyone,
otherwise Janice will wish she'd never met him. Owen gives
in meekly and disappears.
