Key Storylines:
Charlie spends much of 1982, 1983 and 1984 flitting between Sydney, Melbourne and the rest of the world, returning home to Sydney mainly when Patricia has troubles. Charlie is Patricia's best friend and frequently provides a shoulder to cry on.

In 1983, Charlie meets up-and-coming designer, Lisa Cook. Lisa agrees to produce a one-off outfit for Charlie - and Charlie is so impressed with the result that she offers to become Lisa's backer and set her up in a proper business; and in 1984 and 1985, Charlie helps Patricia when she's on the run from Roger Carlyle: Charlie is the last person to see Patricia before she flies off to Rio de Janeiro to escape her problems in Australia and the first person to realise a few months later that the stunning new arrival in Australia, Alison Carr, is actually Patricia after plastic surgery.

In 1985, Charlie is shocked to meet the children she hadn't seen since they were young - together with their father, Charlie's first husband, Eric Tate: Adam and Sally Tate come back into Charlie's life after Adam, a police officer, becomes involved in providing protection for Leigh Palmer. Eric had always told his children that Charlie was a bad mother and that she'd run out on Adam and Sally, but Leigh digs up old court records from Charlie and Eric's divorce, which show that Eric had driven Charlie away.

A delighted Charlie starts to get to know her children again, but their growing relationship is short-lived: Sally has a fling with Tom Chaplin, who a distressed Charlie is already seeing; and Adam decides to go cycling in Inner Mongolia after Leigh commits suicide while on trial for kidnapping baby Robert Palmer.

When Wayne Hamilton invites Charlie to invest in a gym he's found, everyone warns her that he'll rip her off. Charlie refuses to listen, though, and she puts up a large amount of her money. Sadly, it turns out that Wayne does indeed con her. Charlie is furious, but has to accept what has happened to her.

While staying at a health spa in 1987, Charlie meets Todd Buckley, a fitness instructor who works there. There's a instant attraction, and when Charlie returns home Todd comes with her. The couple quickly announce their engagement, despite attempts by Alison to break them up. In fact, Charlie becomes so appalled at Alison's behaviour and schemes that she throws her out. Alison ends up staying in a cheap, run-down motel while Charlie enjoys a fairytale wedding to Todd and prepares to live happily ever after.
