Tick runs away from a children's home and ends up staying in an old caravan behind the mansion in Sydney. He's found and taken into care in the mansion.

Alison Carr decides to use Tick for her own purposes by persuading Wayne that he's the child's father: Wayne fathered a child in his teenage years and Alison - then Patricia - paid off the mother to prevent scandal surrounding the Hamiltons. Tick agrees to go along with her plan and becomes very fond of Wayne. Wayne takes him on holiday to an island off Sydney - but disaster ensues when Tick falls on a hunting knife and is left seriously injured. As Alison has arranged for the captain of the boat that took them to the island to leave them stranded, Wayne has to swim for help - but is almost attacked by a shark in the process. Fortunately, Glen Young - who's also on the island, with Ginny Doyle - manages to swim to the mainland and raise help. Tick is operated upon and recovers.

When the time is right for Alison, she pulls the plug on her plan to make Wayne believe he's Tick's father and arranges for Tick to be taken away to live with proper foster parents, leaving Wayne devastated.

A few months later, Tick stays with Wayne again - this time just as a friend - after Wayne suffers a bout of depression following his wife, Susan's, suicide. Tick meets 18-year-old Sarah Hudson and decides that she'd be the ideal girlfriend. When both Wayne and Sarah try to explain that Sarah is too old for him, Tick becomes upset and runs away. He hides in the boot of Susan's car - just as Wayne decides to forget Susan by having the car crushed. Wayne finds Tick just in time - but Alison then steps in and tell him that she's arranged for Tick to return to his foster parents - and when she spreads the news about how Tick almost died at Wayne's hands, Wayne can kiss goodbye to any chance of seeing him again.
